This is our humble beginnings

Proud Mary’s was created for two soul reasons, first and foremost is to make enough money to buy my Mom a Mobility Scooter so She is able to get around town and second was to serve up great tasting coffee.

What started out as a quest for great coffee and searching for a way to afford a mobility scooter for my Mom to get around town here in Peterborough, then to me experimenting with roasting and infusing coffee, turned hobby, turned passion.

So who doesn’t enjoy a great cup of coffee? An awesome cup of coffee is the best way to start your day right? After years of truck driving and spending $80 a week or more at the big coffee chains out on the road.

Fast forward 25 years later, Sitting in my basement with my Mum drinking a real terrible cup of coffee with no way to get good cup of coffee except ordering from a delivery service or buying expensive beans online, I decided to explored the idea of roasting my own coffee beans to help buy my Mom a mobility scooter. So I started doing some research on the best roasting methods, coffee roasters, coffee beans etc. So I bought my first roaster off FBMP and started experimenting. I had my share of failures, but had more successes. I would get up in the wee hours of the morning and get excited to roast a new batch of coffee beans. Nothing beats a fresh roast, something you can’t get in the stores or on the corner.

Coffee beans you get at chains stores or chain coffee shops are roasted months in advance or longer in most cases. As time passes those flavours and aromas of the coffee bean become less and less. The best time to brew freshly roasted beans is at their peak between 7-14 days after they have been roasted. After you go beyond 30 days, the coffee is still good, but the best of the coffee bean has passed.

After my first batch, I was hooked and couldn’t go back to the corner store for that cup of coffee. And here is where my journey begins… Now I would get a hold of some amazing coffee beans and want to roast them straight away and press a Cafetiere or the V60. I started to experiment more and I started to infuse the coffee beans with different flavours. Then I bought an espresso machine to try my coffee all different ways.  Now, What to do, what to do… I did what I naturally love to do, make some for my friends and family to see what they thought.

I would get a new coffee bean, or try a new blend beans, infuse them and give a little to my friends and family to get more of their opinions. I have to say your best critics are your friends and family. At this time I was already enjoying making biscotti and what compliments a great cup of coffee better than a yummy biscotti right? I started to get requests for more infused flavours of coffee so over the next several weeks and in the evenings I would do more experiments and make more coffee for my friends and family to try.

One morning my Mum and I were sitting in our basement enjoying some of my awesome roasts and infused creations of coffee and biscotti and we were jokingly talking about selling these amazing small batch roasted or infused coffee beans. That night I did not get any sleep, just tossing and turning from excitement. By the next morning, I came up with an awesome name, that same day I bought a domain name and later that day I developed an awesome website and an awesome package label. I developed a really groovy simple logo and of course I thought what was a great name that reminded me of no other than my late Great Aunt Mary Jane who raised me, And for theme sake, the hippie happy days. We love everything that represents my Great Aunt and the hippie era. We love groovy, spiritual, earthly feel good stuff.

So another morning came and my Mum and I brainstormed on what would make it possible to buy her mobility scooter and make a successful business. We narrowed it down to a few simple values. Excellent customer service, great quality product, made specifically for the customer the way they want it. It was that simple.

Proud Mary’s was born.

So now, 2024, our passion for roasting and infusing coffee beans ignited right in our own basement, in none other than a Gene Roaster We bought off Facebook and a barbeque grill around back.

Little did we know that this humble beginning would evolve into something extraordinary. We started roasting and infusing coffee solely for our own personal enjoyment, but fate had other plans. And now when we realized our local farmers’ market lacked freshly roasted coffee even infused coffee. This revelation was a pivotal moment, sparking an idea to share our feel good coffee and infused coffee with the masses.

Witnessing the same coffee void in neighboring markets, we felt compelled to fill it. What started as a quest for great tasting coffee and an experiment soon blossomed into a thriving coffee roasting infusion online sensation.

Today, we proudly roasting and infusing in the same location.
