I was out yesterday and I got into a conversation about coffee grind. I was asked, “Why is whole bean coffee better than ground coffee?
Whole bean coffee is generally considered better than pre-ground coffee for a few key reasons:
- Freshness & Flavour – Whole beans retain their natural oils and volatile compounds longer, which means fresher and more flavourful coffee. Once coffee is ground, it starts losing its aroma and taste quickly due to oxidation.
- Longer Shelf Life – Whole beans stay fresh for weeks or even months if stored properly, while ground coffee goes stale much faster because of its increased surface area.
- Better Aroma – Grinding coffee just before brewing releases its full aroma, enhancing the sensory experience.
- More Brewing Control – With whole beans, you can grind to the exact coarseness needed for your brewing method (Espresso, French press, V60 pour-over, etc.), ensuring optimal extraction and better taste.
- Less Risk of Contamination – Pre-ground coffee like a sponge can absorb moisture, odors, and other flavours from the environment more easily than whole beans.
If you’re serious about coffee, investing in a good burr grinder and grinding your beans fresh before brewing makes a noticeable difference!
