Why v60 pour over taste better than drip

We at Proud Mary’s Coffee have tested the V60 Pour-Over Over vs. Drip Coffee and here is what we found.

At Proud Mary’s Coffee, we’ve put the V60 pour-over to the test against a drip coffee machine and the Keurg coffee machine with our Colombian Supremo, Our Honduras Santa Maria Roast and our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe roast , and the results are clear—The V60 brings out the best in our coffee. Here’s why:

1. Control Over Brewing Variables

With a V60, you manually control:

  • Pour rate – Allows for even saturation and bloom.
  • Water temperature – You can use hotter water (~195-205°F) for better extraction.
  • Brew time – You decide how long water stays in contact with the coffee, preventing over- or under-extraction.

A standard drip coffee maker (like a Mr. Coffee or Keurig) automates this process, often leading to inconsistent water distribution and extraction.

2. Even Extraction

  • The spiral ridges in the V60 filter encourage a consistent flow rate.
  • Water flows directly through the coffee grounds rather than pooling in certain areas (which happens in many drip machines).
  • Manual pouring ensures all grounds are evenly extracted, unlike drip machines where water may not fully reach all grounds.

3. Paper Filters & Clarity

  • The thinner paper filters used in V60 allow more delicate flavours to shine while still filtering out oils and sediment.
  • Some drip machines use thicker or different filters, which can mute flavours and trap some of the coffee’s complexity.

4. Coffee-to-Water Ratio Precision

  • With a V60, you measure and adjust the coffee-to-water ratio precisely.
  • Most drip machines use a fixed ratio, which may not be ideal for every coffee type.

5. Bloom Effect

  • With a V60, you bloom the coffee by pre-wetting the grounds, allowing CO₂ gas to escape.
  • Many drip machines don’t allow proper blooming, leading to a slightly sour or uneven taste.

Final Verdict

V60 pour-over coffee generally has a cleaner, brighter, and more flavourful taste because of the precise control over extraction. Drip coffee machines are more convenient but often result in a flatter or over-extracted brew.

If you like balanced, nuanced flavours, V60 wins. If you prioritize convenience, drip coffee is still a solid choice!
